Sounds of Southern Africa. Music, Empowerment, Freedom. With the help of various experts, these podcasts explore the links between music, politics, freedom of expression and censorship in several countries of Central and Southern Africa, from the 20th century to the present day.

Lizabé Lambrechts and David Marks are the guests of the third episode, dedicated to the Hidden Years Music Archive. This collection contains a wide variety of documents dating from the apartheid era: discs, recordings, concert posters, private archives, etc. It was created and put together by musician David Marks himself; Lizabé Lambrechts is the current chief curator of archives at the University of Stellenbosch.

Musicologist turned archivist Dr Lizabé Lambrechts works as a popular music and cultural heritage researcher and practitioner. For the past ten years, she has worked as a researcher and as an archivist, building and maintaining one of the biggest and fastest growing popular music archives in South Africa, the Hidden Years Music Archive, at Stellenbosch University.
